Beginners are always welcome
Regardless of your age, gender, or phisical condition you can start practicing karate. Classes are highly structured, safe and emphasize an individual's abilities while challenging his or her's limitations.
It is not the posession of great strength that makes a karateka, but the ability to coordinate your mind and body. Our training develops that ability while learning an effective method of self defense. It is an activity in which advancing age or health problems are not a hindrance. Rather, it encourages proficiency and keen coordination of mind and body.
The goal of true karate practice is the perfection of oneself through the perfection of the art.

Instructors
The direct heritage linking Tahoe dojo to the origins of shotokan karate assures the highest level of instruction. Our black belt instructors have studied directly under Tsutomu Ohshima (the originator of traditional karate in the US, widely regarded as a top karate master in the world) and have received their black belt ranking through gradings held by Shotokan Karate of America. The traditional ranking system of SKA assures that when you are ready for grading, the rank you are given is indicative of your actual ability.
Tahoe dojo leader and head instructor Gregg Henrikson (sandan, or 3nd degree black belt) has been practicing karate since 1976 and has been teaching karate since 1990.
One of Gregg's original students, Phillip Schacht, achieved the rank of nidan (2nd degree black belt) and is assisting with classes.

Fees
You can observe the classes any time and even try a class free of charge or any obligations.
We don't have contracts and there are no additional fees for belt tests.
The Recreation Center requires a purchase of a $60 punch card good for 10 classes ($75 non-residents). We try to keep the non-commercial spirit of SKA alive and have a Dojo Sponsorship Fund. All the profits from the student's fees go into this fund and are spent on sponsoring serious students in various ways: free uniforms and gear, sponsored trips to exchange practices or special trainings, even up to 50% refunds of class fees.
We teach karate not to make money, but to share the knowledge that was passed to us from the old masters. Our reward is in knowing that real karate-do will not die with our generation.
